Mr. Church tells the story of a unique friendship that develops when a little girl and her dying mother retain the services of a talented cook – Henry Joseph Church (Eddie Murphy). What begins as a six month arrangement instead spans fifteen years, and creates a family bond that lasts forever.
Insider’s tip: “The film is emotionally manipulative, to be sure, but it’s ultimately hard to resist, especially given the quality of the lead performances” (Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter). Joe Dziemianowicz of the New York Daily News adds: “Murphy’s low-key but affecting performance is filled with loaded and loving glances. And the restraint becomes the 55-year-old star.” Well-paced, written, and acted, Mr. Church is a heart-warming film, captivating from beginning to end. The jazz score in the background adds to the enjoyment and appeal.
